Mother Sentenced To Jail After Her Daughter Died In An Accident For Not Having Her Seat Belt On; What Parents Need To Know

Charged with involuntary manslaughter for failing to put a seatbelt on her little daughter who died in an accident while she was driving. It’s fair? Everything we need to know as parents.

A sentence from a judge to a mother in the United States sets a precedent and makes us aware of something very simple that parents often overlook.

Ten days in jail, 18 months of probation and 3,000 hours of community service is the sentence to which Carolyn Dawn Hughes, 24, was sentenced in the state of Utah, in the United States, for the death of her 3-year-old daughter year-old traveling in the company of 7 other children and his mother.

As reported by KSL, none of the children being transported in the vehicle appeared to be wearing seat belts. The girl who died and her 2-year-old brother were Hughes’s children, the other children were not hers.

This mother had received a fine, a year before the fatal accident, for carrying children without a seatbelt on.

Something we should be aware of as parents

Statistics published by Forbes say that more than a third of children who die in car accidents and who are under the age of 13 are not wearing a seat belt.

The Department of National Transportation and Safe Traffic in the United States published an announcement urging “parents and caregivers to be the first to ensure that children are properly restrained in the proper seats for their weight and age.”

So far, car accidents are the leading cause of death for children under the age of 13. In 2011 alone, two children died and 338 were injured daily as a result of an accident.

It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengers wear their seat belt.

Just as in airplanes, despite the fact that all of us who have already traveled in an airplane or seen a movie that includes a plane trip, we know that we must fasten our seatbelt, however, there are a lot of people who do not does.

The percentage of deaths in plane accidents is much lower compared to deaths in vehicles, however, the flight attendants go seat by seat making sure that each of the passengers is properly insured.

Car trips, even if they are only two blocks long, should be no exception. Most children resent being attached to seat belts, and many parents, to avoid their child’s tantrum, overlook it.

In many Latin American countries, not wearing a seat belt is illegal and the subject of a fine. However, this should be mandatory by our own conscience.

We should not drive unless each occupant is wearing a seat belt

It’s a bit alarming to think that a rule as simple as this should be enforced by law with fines and jail sentences. It does not make sense that something so small that they only arrive for a minute, is not done and that for this reason, our children lose their lives, however we do it all the time.

As a general rule, all drivers in the world should not even start the car engine until everyone is wearing their seat belt properly.

Charged with involuntary manslaughter

This mother, like other parents in American history, has not only lost her daughter while she was behind the wheel, but has now been charged with the involuntary manslaughter of her own daughter.

Something that could have taken her 5 minutes, today sentenced her to a life full of regret, guilt and pain.

Let’s fasten our family, if we love them as much as we say.
