Do you know what transgenic foods are? In this article we tell you why you should learn to choose the type of food that you bring to your table, for the good of your family.
If you are a mother, like me, you will agree that giving the best food to your family is one of your priorities. Among the different foods that we provide in our home is love, an inexhaustible source in which we recharge energy to go out into the world. And in relation to physical food, I am sure that every day you struggle to choose and prepare the best in terms of quality, price and nutrition to bring delicious delicacies to the table that will nourish everyone at home.
But let me stop here, do you really know if what you bring to your table is of good quality? Do you think that by eating vegetables and greens, you are giving your children the best? Let me tell you that this is not always the case. Therefore, do not miss this article, as it will change the way you see foods that you previously considered healthy.
Do you know what transgenic foods are?
They are those foods that have been genetically modified. This means that they were produced by modifying the DNA of an organism through genetic engineering. That is, genes from another food are incorporated into a certain food so that it acquires desired characteristics. For example: obtaining vegetables that resist pests, tomatoes that take longer to rot, that cows produce more milk, that wheat is more resistant to droughts, etc.
Those who are in favor of this type of food explain that they are created to fight against hunger on the planet, improve species, and that they are safe to consume. But there is research that shows otherwise. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are believed to:
1. They harm organic or traditional agriculture
This occurs, among other things, because transgenic crops can contaminate other crops thanks to pollination, that is, the ability of pollen to travel long distances through the air and various insects.
2. Use of environmentally harmful herbicides
. In transgenic crops, a type of herbicide called glyphosate is obligatorily used, which has the property of sterilizing the land, eliminating any crop that is not genetically modified. This is terrible, since it contributes to the gradual loss of plant species. On the other hand, producers who want to grow organically and naturally lose the possibility of choosing what type of food to grow and consume. What’s more, in reality we all lose that possibility sooner or later if we do not take measures to stop this fact and defend our rights as consumers.
There are countries, for example, Italy, that are banning this type of food. In many other places, such as the United States, there is no requirement for informational labeling, that is, there is no way to know which foods are genetically modified. On the other hand, in Uruguay it is already the law that transgenic foods must carry a label that clearly identifies them. This should be the case in every country on the globe, since it is a consumer’s right to know if the food they bring to their table is genetically modified or not.
What consequences can consuming this kind of food have on our health?
In a study carried out by scientists from the city of Vienna, it has been proven that transgenic foods can cause infertility. On the other hand, it has also been proven that there is a close relationship between the growth hormones injected into cattle and breast, prostate and colon cancer.
As much as it is said that they are harmless, the reality is that not much is yet known about the damage they can cause us. For example, it is believed that foods such as soybeans and corn, when genetically modified and then processed and consumed, have side effects that are harmful to the body.
How to avoid transgenic foods?
By becoming aware that this kind of food can cause damage to our health in the short and long term, we can ask ourselves, what do I do now? To get started, here are a couple of tips:
1. Try to buy organic food
What is organic food? They are those foods that in their preparation and cultivation have avoided the use of synthetic pesticides or herbicides or artificial fertilizers. Check the labels of the products you consume to make sure they are organic.
2. Find out about which products are GMO-free
The non-governmental organization Greenpeace has drawn up a list of transgenic and non-transgenic products. Before going shopping, check it out and take it with you, it will be very useful when choosing.
This theme gives a lot of fabric to cut. We present links that will be useful if you want to deepen on this topic. And remember that, as the German philosopher and anthropologist Ludwig Feuerbach said, in his book “Teaching food”: “We are what we eat.”
